Modern Mud Mornings
Thursdays: 10am- 1pm
All Levels
Instructor: Lucy Alexander
Session 1: Jan 9th - Feb 13th (6 weeks)
In this hands-on pottery class, students will learn the fundamentals of working with clay on the potter's wheel. The class takes place in a bright, airy studio filled with pottery wheels and all the tools and materials needed.
The instructor, a seasoned ceramicist, will begin by demonstrating basic centering and opening techniques. Students will watch as a formless lump of clay is shaped and centered on the spinning wheel. Once students understand the basics, it will be their turn to get behind the wheels. With clay wedged and ready, they will practice centering and opening their own lumps of clay under the guidance of the instructor.
As they gain proficiency, students will learn how to pull the clay up into classic shapes like cylinders and bowls. The instructor will offer tips on proper form, keeping the clay centered, and techniques for creating different shapes, rims, and decorative elements. Throughout the class, there will be opportunities for one-on-one coaching from the instructor to troubleshoot and refine techniques. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to revisit the pottery wheel, this class offers a supportive, creative environment to get your hands dirty and experience the magic of throwing clay. Prepare to get messy and tap into your artistic side!
