Instructor: Robert Abrams

This is a 3 part workshop: August 11th, Sept. 9th, and Sept. 14th. You must bring your own bisqueware. This workshop will take place at Amphora Ceramics Studio in San Rafael. Experience the thrilling process of raku firing as seen on the Great Pottery Throw Down! Raku is a low temperature firing process inspired by traditional Japanese techniques. The hot pottery is removed from the kiln during the firing and immersed in combustible materials which cover the surface of the ceramics and react with the glazed and unglazed areas. The results are instantaneous and excitingly unpredictable.

$125 per person

Part 1/3: Sunday, August 11th: 6pm: Zoom meeting & discussion - During this portion of the workshop you will learn about the process of raku, what to expect and what kind of ceramic work you need to create in preparation. This meeting is mandatory for the raku participation. If you have attended this meeting for previous Raku workshops at MVPS, you may request to be excused from this meeting by emailing robert@amphoraceramicstudio.com.

Part 2/3: Monday, Sept. 9th, 3pm-6pm at Amphora Ceramic Studio: Glazing - During part 2 you will learn about the different ways of applying raku glazes and what the different types of glazes do during the firing process. You will need to have your work already bisque fired by this date in order to glaze your pottery for this portion of the workshop. The raku glazes will be available during open studio hours at Amphora Ceramic studio if you don’t end up having time to finish glazing your work during part 2.

Part 3/3: Saturday, Sept. 14th, 10am-1pm at Amphroa Ceramic Studio 452 Du Bois St., San Rafael, CA 94901: The Firing! You don't want to miss this part! Bring your glazed pieces. You are welcome to bring food beverages to share if you wish. What to wear: Please wear non flammable natural fibers such as cotton, denim, leather, and canvas that you don't mind getting dirty and smelly. Your clothes will absorb the smoke so wear items appropriate for being around a campfire. This event will be held outside so bring layers. You should also wear an N95 mask to avoid smoke inhalation. We will need everyone's help during the firing process. Please plan on staying until the entire firing process is complete to help clean up .
