Join Sharon Virtue for 4 hour surface decoration workshop
Sharon Virtue celebrates over 30 years of experience as a studio potter and ceramic arts instructor. She Is known for highly colorful and decorative ceramic surfaces and refers to herself as a painter who uses clay and glazes. Sharon utilizes many techniques to create her textured surfaces, including Sgraffito. Sgraffito derives from the Italian word meaning 'to scratch'. This workshop is suitable for all levels, and we will explore various levels of complexity, using this technique.
Come prepared with leather hard clay (not too dry). We can carve both flat and round surfaces, bring a piece to experiment with various carving tools to explore the quality of lines we can create, and we’ll start without using slip. We can further develop our Sgraffito skills using contrasting colored slips painted onto the leather hard surface and then scratching our designs thru the slip to reveal the clay body.
Sgraffito techniques are best with smooth clay bodies- but can also be used with grogged or texture clays if a rough finish is desired effect.
We will learn methods to transfer drawings, and how to use cut out stencils to add graphic shapes which can compliment our Sgraffito designs.
Sharon will provide demonstrations and students will have time to work on their own pieces with individual guidance.
We will provide:
Clay - a leather hard flat tile 8x8 inches
some basic carving tools, ball stylus, pin tools & loop tools
Slips
Newspaper
Bisque firing of work made for general public
Bisque and glaze firing for students and members of the studio
What students need to bring?
