Transforming The Cube With Bill Abright

$150.00

Membership Fee: $120

Join Bill Abright for a two day handbuilding workshop.

October 11th, 6pm-9pm and October 12th, 10am-1pm at Amphora Ceramic Studio

"I have always enjoyed taking advantage of the plastic nature of hollow clay forms by paddling and impressing them into much different shapes than they began. Trapping air inside causes the soft forms to respond in the round and react beyond the point of contact"

We will use a homemade tile cutter to cut 6 equal sides from a prepared slab. Then we will assemble them into cubes using scratch and slip joinery, augmented with stitching the seams to make a form durable enough to transform by impressing and paddling into organic non cubic shapes. After an overnight drying period, the forms and surfaces will be refined. Lid divisions that have been designed into the form will be cut, interiors finished, and lids re-attached with wax resist to guarantee a perfect fit when fired. All tools and materials will be provided by Amphora Ceramic Studio.

Bill Abright is an artist living and working in San Anselmo. He taught drawing, design and ceramics at the College of Marin in Kentfield, from1975 until his retirement in 2015 and has been influential in the lives of many artists. He has exhibited throughout the U.S. and his work is in numerous private and museum collections, including the Oakland Museum of California, and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. He currently maintains a home and studio with his wife and fellow ceramist Claudia Tarantino.
